Government-Backed Nuclear Loans

U.S. DOE Has Provided Loans For AP1000 Commercial Nuclear Reactors

The U.S. Department of Energy announced a $17.5 billion conditional loan package to support construction of 10 AP1000 commercial nuclear reactors, with funding issued through the Office of Energy Dominance Financing in partnership with Westinghouse Electric Co. The loans are structured to finance long-lead component purchases, featuring staggered disbursements tied to partner equity commitments.

Each of five eligible projects will pair with Westinghouse to build two 1.1 GW AP1000 reactors, with project partners required to commit $500 million in equity per project before accessing DOE funding. The coordinated procurement strategy is designed to reduce costs, strengthen the domestic nuclear supply chain and accelerate deployment.

For consumers, the initiative aims to expand reliable baseload power generation while supporting faster reactor construction, reflecting renewed investment in large-scale nuclear infrastructure.
