The Citizen Bridge Brings New Yorkers Closer to the Water

Brooklyn-based artist Nancy Nowacek recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for a pop-up walkway called the 'Citizen Bridge.' Designed to connect the New York City harbor with Governors Island, the floating bridge helps residents reclaim a long-lost pedestrian path.

The Citizen Bridge is a floating bridge that helps New Yorkers travel from Brooklyn to Governors Island. The bridge itself is a temporary walkway that ferries passengers across the water just like a boat would. However, unlike a boat, the bridge is separated from the water by only a few feet. This is intended to create an intimate experience of traveling across the water in a way that is not possible by any other means of transport. As Nowacek explains, "It's trying to refocus New Yorkers' attention on the waterway as a public space that's there for them."

In addition to helping increase access to Governors Island, the project gives consumers an unexpected way to interact with the water that surrounds the city.
