Chiaroscuro Food Photography

Nadine Greeff is Inspired by Classic Oil Painting Masterpieces

It could be argued that some of the biggest food blogs and Instagram accounts take cues from the chiaroscuro food photography of Nadine Greef. Or, more specifically, the chiaroscuro style the photographer is inspired by. Full of dark and rich colors, there is a romance to the dishes that really lets their shining qualities stand out all the more.

Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Greef was a floral designer before stepping behind the camera. Yet she clearly has a creative eye in general as demonstrated throughout her chiaroscuro food photography series. About her chosen style, she says, “Certain elements like an ingredient, wine glass or a spoon are occasionally hidden in the shadows adding a bit of mystery.”
