Geometric Minimal Chess Sets

Chess Matt Edition by Lee Jinwook Reduces Pieces to Abstract Forms

The Chess Matt Edition by Lee Jinwook is a chess set designed by Seoul-based designer Lee Jinwook that removes traditional figurative references from the game. The pieces are reduced to geometric forms, with each type defined by minimal cuts and angles rather than symbolic features. The king uses a notched top, the bishop includes a diagonal slice, and the knight appears as a rectangular block with a curved indentation. Each piece is distinguished only by its shape rather than decorative elements.

The set uses powder-coated pieces with a matte finish and brushed metal accents around the base. The contrast between the matte surfaces and metallic bands defines each piece visually. The board functions as a cover for storage, allowing the set to fold into a compact 115-millimeter cube. The components are designed for portability while maintaining a consistent geometric structure across all pieces.
