Calasparra Town Hall Introduces Flexible Public Spaces in Spain

— June 10, 2026 — Art & Design
MACH has completed Calasparra Town Hall, a new civic building designed to strengthen the public heart of the Spanish town. Created for Calasparra City Council, the 1,120-square-metre project sits beside the municipal theatre and market square, helping establish a new civic centre for community and administrative activities. The building’s exterior is wrapped in textured Cartagena-red render, a color inspired by the historic kiosks of nearby Cartagena and intended to create a strong visual identity within the urban landscape.

Inside, the concrete structure remains exposed and is finished with a pale pink pigment that softens the material’s appearance. Open-plan floors are organized around a central service core, allowing the spaces to function as council offices, event venues, or community gathering areas as needs change over time. Large rectilinear and arched openings bring daylight deep into the interiors, while a curved balcony overlooks the adjacent square.

Trend Themes

  1. Flexible Civic Hubs — Open-plan municipal buildings with shared service cores signal a market for public spaces that shift between administration, events, and community use without major renovations.
  2. Color-coded Urban Landmarks — Bold regional pigments and textured façades turn civic infrastructure into recognizable place branding, creating demand for materials and design systems tied to local identity.
  3. Soft Brutalist Interiors — Exposed concrete finished with warm pigments reflects a shift toward durable institutional interiors that feel approachable while reducing reliance on secondary cladding.

Industry Implications

  1. Civic Architecture — Adaptive layouts and expressive envelopes are redefining town halls as multifunctional anchors for public life rather than single-purpose administrative assets.
  2. Urban Planning — Compact civic clusters beside theatres, markets, and squares reveal opportunities for regenerating town centers through layered public programming and pedestrian activity.
  3. Building Materials — Pigmented renders and softened structural finishes point to new product categories that combine low-maintenance performance with emotionally resonant color palettes.
