Raj Khaira recently launched a campaign that aims to tackle the stigma surrounding the birth of baby girls in India. 'Ladoo' is a sweet Indian dessert that is only given out to mark the birth of baby boys. This campaign aims to fight the sexist tradition by celebrating the birth of baby girls as well.
The 'Pink Ladoo Campaign' campaign was launched on October 11th, which also marks the UN's 'International Day of the Girl Child.' The campaign aims to fight the stigma that surrounds women in Indian culture. Instead of viewing baby girls as a burden, Khaira wants Indian people to celebrate the birth of girls. Khaira choose to use pink ladoo to make her statement because the dessert is intertwined with concept of celebration in Indian culture. As Khaira explains, "I want us to unite as a community and elevate the status of women together."
The pink ladoo ultimately serves as a way to start a dialogue about social problems in South Asian cultures.
