Peloton has created a new automated vehicle system, which allows one truck driver to control two trucks. The system uses Level 4 Automated Following that would in practice double the number of products that can be moved with one driver. The automated vehicle system was announced recently at the Automated Vehicle Symposium.
It works by placing a human-driven truck in front of the automated one, and the truck behind follows the human-driven one. This can be achieved with a number of technologies that enable the vehicles to find the other's location. A radar-based braking system allows the truck to follow the other's stopping patterns, and software allows it to follow the other. The following truck is able to use the steering and acceleration data with minimal delay.
