Compact Steam Generator Designs

Apollo Atomics Unveiled Its Miniaturized Steam Generator

Apollo Atomics introduced a compact steam generator designed to shrink one of a nuclear reactor’s largest components and make power plants substantially smaller. The Y Combinator-backed startup uses a metal block containing needle-thin channels that carry reactor coolant and steam loops, producing a steam generator roughly the size of a person.

The company says the design can replace hand-built, multistory steam generators with factory-manufactured modules that improve heat transfer and support modular assembly. Apollo has already demonstrated the approach with a 40-kilowatt reactor developed with MIT and recently raised $26 million in seed financing. It plans commercial deployment beginning in 2028, with reactor sizes ranging from 10 MWe to 300 MWe.

For grid operators, the smaller factory-built system could reduce construction time, labor and capital costs, positioning thermal conversion efficiency as a key lever in making advanced nuclear power more competitive.
