3M and Microsoft have announced a strategic partnership focused on advancing AI data center infrastructure and enterprise transformation, with Microsoft becoming the first hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology in its Azure data centers. 3M, on the other hand, will leverage Microsoft's AI and digital platforms to modernize key business functions including customer service, finance, sales, and marketing.
The EBO technology, which uses an expanded beam optical interface rather than the direct contact required in traditional fiber connectors, is designed to make connections faster to install, more tolerant of contamination from dust and handling, and easier to maintain. Microsoft has found this to reduce network deployment timelines in certain environments while maintaining strong signal performance in live data center conditions. 3M is scaling production of this technology to meet growing demand from hyperscalers and data center operators building infrastructure for AI workloads.
