Physicists Zhiwei Wang and David Pearmain at the University of Birmingham's Nanoscale Physics Research Laboratory who placed palladium atoms on a carbon base earlier this week were surprised with a spontaneously formed 8 nanometer heart. The researchers had nothing to do with the heart-shaped aspect of the phenomenon.

The beautiful palladium heart can’t be seen by the human eye. It’s so small, it couldn’t even be mounted in jewelry, but it was it was photographed as viewed through Lab’s JEOL 2100F microscope, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
