TotalEnergies Corbion Launches Its Luminy FOAM 50F Product

TotalEnergies Corbion introduced Luminy FOAM 50F, a high-melt-strength polylactic acid (PLA) grade designed for extrusion foaming applications as a lower-carbon alternative to XPS foam. Made from sugarcane-based PLA, the material targets food packaging applications while enabling manufacturers to transition to bio-based materials without major production changes.

Luminy FOAM 50F is compatible with existing XPS extrusion lines, offering comparable densities and functional performance while delivering at least a 70% reduction in carbon footprint. The material is industrially compostable, recyclable and free from styrene, PFAS and persistent microplastics. It is also formulated to provide stable foam processing without additional additives or chain extenders and is approved for food-contact applications in the US.

For manufacturers and brands, Luminy FOAM 50F provides a lower-carbon packaging material that maintains production efficiency and product performance. The launch reflects the growing shift toward bio-based alternatives that support more sustainable packaging without requiring significant capital investment.
