Bocci's 93 Collection Explores Molten Aluminum Poured into Hot Glass

— March 11, 2026 — Art & Design
The Bocci 93 Collection is a lighting series developed by the Vancouver-based design brand through experimentation with glass and molten metal. The Bocci 93 Collection is created by pouring molten aluminum into a hand-blown glass sphere while the glass is still hot, allowing the metal to flow and solidify inside the vessel. The process leaves a visible trace of the aluminum’s movement, capturing a single moment where heat, pressure, and gravity shape the final form.

Each pendant contains concealed LEDs positioned to project light through the glass walls and across the internal aluminum surface. Metal disks inside the fixture diffuse the light outward, highlighting the irregular contours created during casting. Because the glass blowing and metal pouring are performed manually, every piece develops slightly different shapes, textures, and patterns.

Trend Themes

  1. Hybrid Glass-metal Casting — The union of molten aluminum and hot glass creates composite forms that reveal internal metal topographies, enabling novel material hybrids for functional art and structural components.
  2. Moment-capture Manufacturing — Casting processes that freeze transient physical dynamics produce one-of-a-kind artifacts, offering a paradigm where process history becomes the primary design language.
  3. Handcrafted Tech-integrated Lighting — Combining manual glassblowing with concealed LED systems leads to luminaires that merge artisanal variation with predictable electronic performance, redefining bespoke lighting experiences.

Industry Implications

  1. High-end Lighting — Premium lighting brands can leverage process-visible composites to differentiate products through sculptural aesthetics coupled with engineered light distribution.
  2. Architectural Design — Architects may specify fixtures that act as both light sources and tactile material statements, influencing interior atmospheres with unique surface geometries.
  3. Luxury Home Accessories — Design-led home accessory makers could incorporate trapped metal-in-glass techniques to create collectible objects that emphasize singularity and material storytelling.
