Waymo Will Create 3D Traffic Maps Around Congested Areas in LA

Waymo will begin to crate 3D traffic maps of Los Angeles to attempt to understand the flow traffic in the most heavily congested areas in the city. Waymo will also be looking to assess if Los Angeles would be a good city for self-driving cars. The company will bring three different Chrysler Pacifica minivans to the city in order to make 3d traffic maps around the downtown and also sections of Wilshire Boulevard.

The mapping efforts will include topographical data, like lane changes, curb heights and more. That data is then assessed against relevant traffic control data, like signs, crosswalk length and where traffic lights are placed. Waymo will use this data to map the roads and to evaluate driving conditions as well as evaluate how its AV technology could be implemented.
