Bjarke Ingels Outlines the Ways Architecture Can Inform Living on Mars

Bjarke Ingles gave a keynote about the ways in which earth architecture can be adapted and used for humans living on Mars. The architect was a cofounder of PLOT Architects in 2001, and founded the BIG-Bjarke Ingles Group in 2005.

Ingles initially discusses how his organization was hired by the Dubai Future Foundation to design a city to sustain humans living on Mars. He later outlines that under optimal conditions the journey to Mars can take as little as three months.

Bjarke Ingles moves on to question why can't people take lessons from earth and apply it to how people will live on mars? Ingles provides an example in Tunisia where people live in structures carved into the rock, which protects people from the heat and cold of a desert climate.

Lastly, Ingles concludes his keynote by outlining the process that could be implemented to transform Mars into an environment that could sustain human life. He states that it will be necessary to merge the ecosystems of earth and Mars to create a new system. Ingles considers the fact that humans will have to combine membranes, 3D printing, and carved out structures to build cities on Mars.
