In Charmian Gooch's global corruption keynote, she reveals some interesting and shocking details about government corruption. She talks about poor countries and the conditions that citizens live in versus the way that wealthy government officials live.
Gooch discusses her time investigating blood diamonds in Angola and discovering through the locals that there was another troubling matter at hand. The people there told her about a large scale corruption involving millions of oil dollars that had gone missing. The elite in these poor countries steal money on a grand scale and put it into bank accounts outside of their own country.
Gooch claims that international banking needs to change to help stop this kind of corruption. The money that has been stolen from these poor countries has robbed them of schools, hospitals and more.
