PepsiCo Europe Will Eliminate Fossil-Based Plastics by 2030

PepsiCo Europe has announced a new packaging move across its Walkers, Lay's and Doritos lineups that will help it to shift towards more sustainable packaging alternatives to fossil-based plastics. The initiative will see the brands shifting to 100% recycled or renewable plastic across all snack chip packets by 2030, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% per tonne, according to the brand. The packaging will be rolled out starting in 2022 in select European markets including with Lay's in France and Walkers in the UK.

CEO of PepsiCo Europe Silviu Popovici commented on the packaging update saying, "Flexible packaging recycling should be the norm across Europe. We see a future where our bags will be free of virgin fossil-based plastic. They will be part of a thriving circular economy where flexible packaging is valued and can be recycled as a new packet. We’re investing with our partners to build technological capacity to do that. We now need an appropriate regulatory landscape in place so that packaging never becomes waste."
