Concrete House Renos

Mar Vista House is a residential renovation in Los Angeles designed by PPAA that transforms a deteriorating bungalow through the addition of board-formed concrete structures. Rather than demolishing the existing house, the architects retained its footprint and introduced new concrete volumes that extend and reorganise the plan. These additions create a clear contrast between the original timber construction and the new material language, establishing a dialogue between lightness and mass. Carefully placed openings bring daylight into the expanded interior while framing views of the sky and the surroundings.

The concrete elements define circulation and separate public and private functions without relying on enclosed rooms. Living areas are arranged to move fluidly between interior spaces and outdoor patios, reinforcing a strong connection to the site. Wood accents and large areas of glazing soften the weight of the concrete and introduce warmth throughout the home.
