Oprah Winfrey is the golden child of product marketing. Oprah’s Book Club is guaranteed to launch the most obscure and unknown authors to fame (just ask James Frey). Perhaps one of the most anticipated holiday television specials each year is “Oprah’s Favourite Things.”

This year though, Oprah took a different approach.  Instead of lavishing her audience with expensive gifts and gadgets like HD refrigerators, laptops, and insanely expensive desserts, she opted for a credit crunch themed special.

Oprah’s Favourite Things theme is ‘Things that cost next to nothing’. Imagine you find out that you got tickets to the Favourite Things episode, only to learn that all you’ll walk away with is advice!!

Tyra Banks has taken to a similar format for a holiday special by picking up where Oprah left off with the expensive gifts of cash and gadgets. There was only one catch: the audience participating was required to wear bright red t-shirts that read “UNEMPLOYED”. Nothing like a little public shaming with your free loot.

Tyra made a big stink in the beginning of today's show about how she is giving all these fun, expensive presents — carried out by quasi-shirtless men — to the audience members, all of whom are unemployed, a pre-requisite she set as a way to cheer up people who aren't doing so well right now. (She actually made them all wear matching red T-shirts that said "unemployed" on them. (jezebel)

Smart move on behalf of Oprah and Tyra. I read a report a few weeks ago, MSNBC (I think), about how next year television producers will weeding out shows surrounding the 'rich and luxurious' and more towards shows and issues that surround middle and lower income class families. We'll see more like shows like 'All in the Family', 'Good Times', and 'Roseanne'.

Yeah I think the worst one that I came across was "The Real Housewives of blah blah blah". Why would I want to watch a bunch of people with money blow it unwisely. It just makes me feel worse. This is why I don't have cable...I never see anything that I don't specifically want to.

We have satellite but rarely watch anything outside of Seinfeld re-runs, Law & Order (hate CSI -- how many cops walk around with their boobs hanging out?), history/science/and animal planet, and the news. I like the Biggest Loser but loathe reality shows in general.

Very smart move on behalf of Ty and O. I can imagine we'll see more media follow their lead. Sandra, Jennifer, I'm totally with you on the TV. I haven't sat down to watch TV in 4 years. If I watch something, it's planned, and it's only that one show, and 99% of the time, it's in a social setting. I've never understood "channel surfing," feels like such a waste of time. I'll stick to the internet!!
