In an evocative Dr Paul Howard Jones keynote on the way that the Internet has changed human thought patterns, the Bristol University professor discusses the various theories surrounding the subject.
The speaker bluntly asserts that the extensive use of online search engines and social media websites does indeed rewire the brain and change the way that is operates. However, he does not believe that this is a completely negative shift and that many of the fears surrounding the impact that the Web will have on socialization need to be altered.
The belief that Facebook and other social media will stunt one's ability to adequately socialize with others is backed up solely by outdated research, the speaker argues. Rather than analyzing the way peoples' interaction were affected by online use in the early 1990s, research needs to instead be conducted on the way that the influx of online users and the changing content available is making an impact.
