Wood-Scanning AI Apps

The WoodAI App Uses Artificial Intelligence to Identify Wood Species

The H&M Group collaborated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to create the Wood Artificial Intelligence Application, also called the WoodAI App. The purpose of this application is to use artificial intelligence for the purposes of identifying wood species and providing information about biomass sourcing. Using a smartphone and a macro lens, workers can identify species of wood and verify whether or not the material to be sources for power generation is on H&M Group’s approved plantation species.

With this AI-powered app, there's the potential to help factories make better decisions when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and using biomass to power production processes. In Cambodia, the government is welcoming the initiative and the way it addresses climate change and the need to responsibly manage plantations and forests.

Wood-scanning AI
The development of WoodAI App is the latest example of wood-scanning AI which could be used in many fields such as forestry, sustainability, and renewable energy.
Smartphone-based Identification
The use of smartphones and macro lenses for identifying wood species and information about biomass sourcing could expand into other industries such as agriculture and horticulture.
Sustainability
The WoodAI App is an example of technology that can help industries reduce their carbon footprint and adopt sustainable practices for their business operations.

Who This Affects Most

Forestry
Technologies like WoodAI App can help forestry experts to better identify and manage forest resources and make better decisions regarding sustainable wood sourcing.
Manufacturing
The use of biomass and the potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions could benefit manufacturing businesses, especially those that rely heavily on energy and natural resources.
