Wireless Signal Blocking Cafes

The Faraday Cafe is an Unconnected Space Outside of the Media

For those who aren't strong enough to make their home a device free, or at the very least an Internet-free, space, there is a wireless signal blocking cafe that helps people disconnect when they feel a little too overloaded. Called Faraway, this coffee shop is the first of its kind that actively repels wireless signals. In order to do that, a metallic box called a Faraday cage is used to block the signals.

Located in Vancouver, British Colombia, the wireless signal blocking cafe was designed by artist Julien Thomas in collaboration with Hughes Condon Marler. Thomas writes, "I wanted to create a space outside of the media--literally outside of our access--so we could have a conversation about how we use technology."
