The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act has been passed in the US House of Representatives as a new initiative that will see whole and 2% milk being brought back in school cafeterias.
The bill comes after a years-long initiative by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) as well as. dairy farmers, dairy food companies, school nutrition leaders, partners, physicians, nutritionists and parents. The bill is slated to be signed into law by President Trump and will require schools to offer students an array of fluid milk options including flavored or unflavored organic or conventional whole milk, 2%, 1%, skim and lactose-free milk. The bill comes after more than a decade of whole and 2% milk being banned from schools.
President and CEO of IDFA Michael Dykes commented on the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act saying, "Today’s House passage marks a defining victory for children’s health and for the dairy community that has fought for more than a decade to restore whole and 2% milk for our nation’s students. We ask for the President to sign the bill into law so the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) can begin working with state governments and school districts across the country to make this law a reality. Our nation’s dairy farmers and processors are ready to work alongside USDA to restore whole milk to every American school.”
