Welcome Little Stranger by Walter Van Beirendonck Creates Immersive Play

— March 26, 2026 — Art & Design
The Welcome Little Stranger playscape by Walter Van Beirendonck is an indoor play environment created for the C-mine arts campus in Genk, Belgium. Belgian fashion designer Van Beirendonck developed the project as part of an initiative inviting creatives to reinterpret contemporary playground design. The space features extraterrestrial-inspired forms, including oversized structures, a ball pit, and a UFO-like installation, forming a soft-play environment designed for children to explore physically and socially.

The layout is organized as an open play zone where sculptural elements function as both visual features and interactive components. The project was developed with input from workshops involving local children, informing the shapes and spatial arrangement. Materials and forms are scaled to encourage movement, climbing, and group interaction, with the playscape installed within a repurposed industrial setting at the former mining site.
