Lattice Steel Pens

The Virga Pen Features a 3D-Printed Stainless Steel Body

The Virga pen was designed by Kjell Semmer of Berlin-based studio Varydes as a ballpoint pen with a 3D-printed 316L stainless steel body. Its open lattice structure creates an organic appearance that changes as light passes through the woven metal framework. Named after the meteorological phenomenon in which rain evaporates before reaching the ground, the pen combines sculptural geometry with everyday functionality. The design measures 12.7 centimeters long, weighs 39 grams, and uses a standard G2 refill with a twist mechanism.

Each pen is individually assembled, inspected, and hand-polished at the Varydes studio while retaining the natural finish of the stainless steel. The additive manufacturing process produces the intricate lattice structure, creating forms that are difficult to achieve through conventional machining. Built for repeated use with replaceable G2 refills, the pen pairs a durable metal construction with a reusable writing system.
