UV-Tagged Milk Bottles

Aldi and Arla Has Introduced Polytag UV-Tagging

Aldi and Arla expanded their collaboration with Polytag to track milk bottles through the recycling process using UV-tagging technology. The project applies UV-tagged wrap-around labels to Arla milk bottles produced at its Oakthorpe site, helping the companies better understand how the packaging moves through recycling streams.

The labels use food-safe fluorescent ink and can be detected by Polytag units installed at Materials Recovery Facilities. These units capture barcode-level data in real time, with participating companies able to access the information through a dashboard. The latest trial uses wrap-around labels instead of the pressure-sensitive labels tested previously to improve durability and coverage.

For Aldi and Arla, the project provides more detailed visibility into packaging after the point of sale. The initiative supports data-based packaging decisions and reflects broader efforts to improve traceability and circularity across recycling systems.

Invisible Packaging Traceability
UV-readable identifiers embedded into everyday packaging create new data layers for post-consumer tracking, enabling brands to measure recycling outcomes with greater precision.
Real-time Recycling Data
Live capture of package-level movement through recovery facilities opens opportunities for analytics platforms that connect retail, manufacturing, and waste management systems.
Durable Smart Labels
Wrap-around labels with fluorescent marking technology represent a shift toward packaging components designed to survive handling, sorting, and recycling conditions while preserving scannability.

Who This Affects Most

Sustainable Packaging
Packaging suppliers can explore material and label formats that combine food safety, durability, and digital traceability for circular economy applications.
Waste Management
Recycling operators gain value from sensor-based infrastructure that transforms sorting facilities into data-generating hubs for brand and retailer reporting.
Dairy Products
Milk producers are positioned to use traceable bottle systems as a way to validate sustainability claims and refine packaging decisions across high-volume product lines.
