The True Grit Elderly in Prisons program for elderly inmates allows them to engage with other elderly inmates and participated in activities such as pet therapy, wheelchair basketball and artistic endeavors.
The program was begun in response to the growing population of elderly people in prisons, and the growing recognition of the unique challenges they face within the prison environment. It was started by the prison's psychologist in collaboration with the Nevada Division of Aging Services.
Each day of the program involves a combination of physical activity, therapy and spirituality, with inmates having a say in the group's running.
The True Grit Elderly in Prisons program has been a success, and has resulted in reduced doctor visits among elderly inmates.
