LMR Naturals by IFF introduced 'Tonka Bean CO₂ Absolute,' a new perfumery extract produced with renewable supercritical CO₂ at its Aumont Aubrac site, featuring a traceable, lower-carbon extraction method. The launch expanded the 'Conscious Collection,' a lineup of highly sustainable natural ingredients tailored for fine and consumer fragrances.
The CO₂ extraction used renewable and recycled CO₂ at low temperatures, which preserved delicate volatiles and avoided petrochemical solvents while delivering a -34% cradle-to-gate carbon footprint versus traditional tonka absolute. IFF described the extract as rich and velvety, with roasted-almond, sun-dried hay and cocoa facets and a brown-sugar twist noted by its perfumers.
For brands and perfumers, the new absolute offers a more climate-conscious way to achieve gourmand warmth and nostalgia in fragrances while maintaining high olfactory fidelity. Its traceability and improved environmental profile align with growing consumer demand for natural, lower-impact scent ingredients.

Key Themes Behind This Trend
- Sustainable CO₂ Extraction
- A shift toward renewable supercritical CO₂ processes creates lower-carbon extraction pathways that preserve delicate volatiles while eliminating petrochemical solvents.
- Traceable Low-carbon Naturals
- Traceability and cradle-to-gate footprint reductions are enabling ingredient narratives that link origin transparency with measurable emissions improvements.
- Climate-conscious Gourmand Ingredients
- Growing demand for warm, nostalgic scent profiles is being met by naturally derived gourmand absolutes that offer both olfactory fidelity and reduced environmental impact.
Where This Applies
- Perfumery and Fragrance
- Fine and consumer fragrance houses are positioned to differentiate products through sustainably produced absolutes that maintain complex aromatic profiles.
- Consumer Packaged Goods
- Beauty and personal-care brands can leverage low-carbon, traceable naturals to align product portfolios with consumer sustainability expectations.
- Agricultural Supply Chains
