Low-Impact Garden Dwellings

The Senior Shelter Offers a Connected Space for Aging Family Members

The Senior Shelter by i29 is a one-story garden home built as a companion to a larger family residence in the Netherlands. Designed for a multigenerational lifestyle, the 100 m² dwelling provides aging relatives with autonomy while staying physically close to loved ones. A central patio anchors the layout, with sliding glass walls that invite natural light and seamless flow between indoors and out. Natural materials—waxed wood cladding, oak cabinetry, and pale concrete floors—establish a quiet, minimal mood.

Inside, the space balances function with warmth. The open plan supports accessibility and movement, while high ceilings and exposed rafters add architectural lightness. Custom built-ins line the perimeter, offering storage without cluttering the sightlines. Sliding partitions create flexible zones for privacy or gathering. With its grounded footprint and meditative palette, the Senior Shelter redefines aging-in-place—delivering dignity, connection, and thoughtful design within a gentle domestic retreat.
