Artfully Sculptured Textured Toilets

Samuel Ross Designs the Formation 02 Orange Toilet

Designer Samuel Ross created the Formation 02, which is a smart toilet that appears to be more of an art item than anything else. This is made for bathroom brand Kohler and marks his first time creating a toilet. It embodies an asymmetrical shape and is defined by sharp angles that nod to brutalist architecture. Using recycled epoxy resin, it surrounds the porcelain bowl with cut-out accents and textured sections that are meant to represent the textures of natural rocks.

Ross tells Dezeen that it is meant to be produced in limited quantities as it appears to be a regular toilet that falls into the realm of a "functional sculpture." He states, "It has such an intensity that pulls you in by use of the colour and by use of the asymmetry. So I would argue that it's actually closer to a sculpture, it just happens to have an incredible function. It's also a new price band for that type of product, which will retail at roughly around $25,000 per unit. So it places itself in this incredible grey area in design at the moment, between object and artifact and design object versus functional object."
