The Floating House is a residence designed by SMStudio and completed in 2023 on Bowen Island, British Columbia. Positioned on the western ridge of the island, the house sits between two burnt old-growth tree stumps that were preserved as part of the site. The structure is elevated above the bedrock through a cantilevered design that creates a shadow gap beneath the building. A steeply pitched gable roof, steel standing-seam cladding, and cedar exterior walls define the building's form. The asymmetrical plan is organized across two wings that respond to changes in elevation between a forested ridge and an open field.
Douglas fir surfaces are used throughout the interior, where large openings frame views of the surrounding landscape. Natural light enters from multiple directions and is filtered by the adjacent forest. The exterior cedar cladding is intended to weather naturally over time. The house was designed to fit within the existing topography rather than alter it through extensive site modifications.
