Spirit Capital unveiled plans for The Bodmin Jail Distillery, a grain-to-glass English whisky distillery to be built at the restored Bodmin Jail site in Cornwall. The development will reuse Grade II-listed buildings and add a purpose-built distillery with a planted roof designed to fit the surrounding landscape.
The site will focus on Cornish whisky made from locally grown grain, alongside gin and vodka inspired by regional botanicals. Planning approval was granted as part of the wider £80 million restoration of Bodmin Jail, with the distillery expected to open in 2027. The project will also include two tasting rooms, a speakeasy cocktail bar, a gift shop and visitor experiences covering fermentation, distillation, maturation and tasting.
For consumers, the project combines locally produced spirits with heritage tourism and on-site education, linking Cornish provenance, historic architecture and hospitality within a single destination.
