Founded by international reporter Beenish Ahmend, the service was inspired by Ahmend's belief that international fiction can offer a different perspective on the world. Ahmend's hope with The Alignist is that readers will be more inclined to learn about the world around them and read headlines from different countries after experiencing a country through a piece of fiction.

In addition to providing a novel, the box also contains several items that relate to the themes explored in the narrative. A recent box featured Karan Mahajan’s 'The Association of Small Bombs,' as well as a roadmap providing context to the novel, a small foldable paper rickshaw, a packet of cardamom chai tea and a poster explaining the history of the sari. All of the items included in The Alignist are ethically sourced and produced by local artisans.
