Temperature-Driven Grande Champagne Cognacs

Louis XIII Black Pearl Uses an Bespoke Cooling Cellar

Louis XIII, Rémy Martin’s luxury Cognac brand, created Black Pearl as a temperature-driven expression that pairs a bespoke “cooling cellar” cabinet and tasting ritual with a midnight-blue decanter inspired by the historic Le Grollet cellar. The blend combines a century-old eau-de-vie stored in a demijohn with a final Louis XIII blend from a single tierçon, bringing together earthy characteristics and the house’s floral and tropical profile.

Served from the cabinet at 13 C, Black Pearl initially presents notes that cellar master Baptiste Loiseau describes as nuts, beeswax, precious wood, coffee and dark chocolate. As it warms, iris, jasmine, passion fruit and dried apricot emerge before earthy and roasted-walnut notes return. Loiseau attributes its creamy texture to distillation on the lees.

Priced at £21,000 and limited to 398 decanters globally, Black Pearl uses temperature and ritual to create a place-specific tasting experience. The release reflects a luxury spirits trend toward highly limited products supported by specialized service, while giving Louis XIII additional value through scarcity, presentation and experiential storytelling.
