Rhode Island design firm Pneuhaus presents a look at its Street Seats, which are a series of converted outdoor inflated benches that can work as self-defense devices. It is meant for potentially dangerous situations when users are out partaking in protests in the US. The studio was recently inspired by confrontations between pro-Palestenian protesters and police on campuses in America to modify the design to offer students protection as well.
The studio explains, "We felt compelled to find a way to help protect these students given the failure of their administration. We quickly realized that the techniques used in Street Seats could be adapted to a smaller modular unit that could serve as seating most of the time, but be used as a shield when things escalated. The material is so durable it would take a sharp metal blade to cut, which we hope police are smart enough not to wield in these chaotic situations."
