AI-Enabled Airline Infrastructures

Southwest Airlines Joins Forces with Amazon Web Services

Southwest Airlines has entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services, designating the latter entity as the preferred cloud provider for a comprehensive technology modernization initiative that aims to transition the airline from its largely on-premises infrastructure to a fully cloud-based, AI-enabled architecture by 2028. The ultimate goal of this tech-forward venture is to enhance Southwest Airlines' operational speed, flexibility, and reliability across all facets of the business.

The airline is leveraging AWS's agentic coding service, Kiro, to refactor legacy code on its critical customer-facing platform, Southwest.com. Over 2,700 developers are now using the tool to build features, automate testing, and generate cloud infrastructure. Southwest Airlines is also adopting an AI-Driven Development Lifecycle model, where intelligent agents assist in software development while engineering teams retain oversight and accountability.

The company is exploring additional agent-based capabilities to support customer experience, operations, and employee workflows.
