Multipurpose Bright Community Parks

Local and Pir 2 Join to Design the Skakkeringen Park

Architecture firms Local and Pir 2 work in collaboration to create the Skakkeringen community park and playground. It is nestled in Etne on the West coast of Norway and it is comprised of a pavilion that is made from recycled aluminum collected from a nearby plant. The Skakkeringen is part of the larger Bestland County pilot programme of creating progressive facilities.

The two forces tackled the design starting with the question which prompts, "How can public schools play a greater civic role in rural places?" Picard explained, "We held iterative workshops where we modelled together, live in 3D, with the students. Some wanted more trees and nature and others were erasing trees and wanted more sport equipment. The result is a balance between these two key qualities offering a green and active schoolyard."
