Have some fun this Christmas and fashion your Christmas tree from silver crystals. This unique science-inspired Christmas decor creates beautiful trees of silver out of silver nitrate solution and copper wire.
Copper, as an element, readily attracts other elements, including silver. When placed in a jar of silver nitrate solution, the silver will form crystals on the copper wire that grew and branch out, forming a silver tree as it eats away at the wire.
With just a slight alteration, this experiment can be used to create a Christmas tree. All that needs to be done to twist the wire into a tree shape before letting it sit in the silver nitrate (which can be found in some craft supply stores) for a couple of days. These silver crystal tress are great DIY Christmas projects for the whole family.
