In an effort to differentiate itself from competitors and increase engagement among users, Tencent is launching a short-video trial on its WeChat platform. The feature will let users publish video clips and photos to their followers via a feed, much different than its current text-focused format. The hope for the WeChat short-video trial is to allow users to share videos and content directly with one another and increase the time spent on the social media platform.
The shift towards short-form videos will help the company regain lost consumers that have shifted to more video-specific sharing platforms. Moreover, the new addition will open a new channel for marketing revenue for clients to sponsor content.
