Modular Retail Systems

Shift Space is a Relocatable Retail Framework Built for Repeat Use

Shift Space is a relocatable retail framework built for repeat use by combining salvaged timber, wool felt and galvanized steel into a modular system that assembles without permanent joints. The components include clothing rails, seating and display structures, each held together with reversible fixings so the entire setup can be packed flat and reconfigured to suit different store formats. A strap-tensioning method compresses timber inserts within steel frames to support metal rails, while optional felt panels can be wrapped and secured for softer display surfaces. The design prioritizes adaptability and durability, allowing the system to operate in compact retail spaces or large gallery settings with minimal material waste.

Studio Edwards developed the system to address the growing need for retail environments that shift quickly in response to short-term leases and evolving merchandising strategies. The approach embraces exposed construction and temporary architecture to reduce unnecessary finishes and simplify transport. The project reflects a broader movement toward lightweight, reusable spatial systems in contemporary retail design.
