Travelers who landed in Shangai's old Longhua Airport may want to plan another trip to the Chinese city in the future to take in the tremendous transformation of the airport's runway into a massive runway park.
What's great about the Xuhui Runway Park is that it has held onto some of the more distinctive elements of the airport, integrating sections of the runway concrete whilst making use of some of the old runway panels to create the park's primary pedestrian path.
Elsewhere, the Xuhui Runway Park's fountains, lawn areas and playground also feature an array of elements that harken back to the airport.
With its refreshing green spaces, welcoming environment and elegantly planned integration that respects the history of the site, the Xuhui Runway Park is a fabulous example of how urban revitalization projects needn't necessarily discard the vestiges of the past.
