The RetroCast mode is a new viewing option from The Weather Channel that presents live weather forecasts through an interface inspired by the network's early cable broadcasts. Available on the web and mobile apps, the feature recreates low-resolution graphics, segmented layouts, saturated blue backgrounds and looping forecast screens while continuing to display real-time weather data. Browser users also experience continuous forecast cycles accompanied by instrumental jazz, reinforcing the nostalgic presentation.
Developed by designer and developer Lee Martin, the interface was recreated using modern web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Vue 3 and Nuxt 4, allowing the layouts to adapt across smartphones and browsers. The experience also preserves familiar details such as forecast cycles beginning at times ending in eight, referencing the network's classic "Local on the 8s" broadcasts. Supporting 20 languages, including right-to-left Arabic, the feature combines contemporary functionality with a visual style that recalls the Weather Channel's early television programming.
