KLAFS is Debuting Its S1 Rectractable Sauna in the US

— March 24, 2026 — Art & Design
KLAFS, a German company with nearly a century of experience in sauna manufacturing, has introduced its retractable sauna unit to the U.S. market.

Dubbed the S1, this product expands from a compact storage configuration that resembles a bookshelf to three times its size at the push of a button. This design sensibility allows the retractable sauna unit to function as a full-scale sauna when in use and then collapse to occupy minimal floor space when not needed.

KLAFS constructs this product with insulated walls, an eight-millimeter glass panel, and premium finishes. Exterior options in matte black or walnut are paired with a walnut interior, and the unit is available in three sizes. The S1's roprietary SANARIUM control system offers five distinct climate settings, enabling users to customize temperature up to 210 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity levels, and ambient lighting to suit personal preferences.

Trend Themes

  1. Retractable Wellness Spaces — The integration of motorized expand-collapse mechanisms into home wellness units presents opportunities for compact properties to offer full-service spa experiences without permanent floor-space sacrifice.
  2. Personalized Climate-controlled Interiors — Advanced control systems that tune temperature, humidity, and lighting enable bespoke micro-environments that could redefine expectations for individualized comfort in shared living spaces.
  3. Luxury Compact Living — High-end finishes and customizable aesthetics packaged in space-efficient assemblies suggest a market for premium, transformable fixtures that deliver aspirational lifestyle features to smaller residences.

Industry Implications

  1. Residential Real Estate — Demand for multifunctional fixtures like retractable saunas could alter unit valuation models by monetizing transient amenity spaces within small-footprint apartments.
  2. Hospitality and Wellness — Hotels and spas that adopt collapsible, premium wellness modules could expand in-room amenity offerings while minimizing renovation complexity and spatial constraints.
  3. Modular Furniture Manufacturing — Producers of transformable furnishings stand to leverage integrated insulation, glass engineering, and climate controls to create higher-margin, tech-enabled product lines.
