'Vin Varavarn Architects' designed an earthquake-proof school that is raised above the ground. in 2014, Thailand's Chiang Rai Province was rocked by a powerful earthquake. The natural disaster destroyed 73 schools and displaced more than 2,000 students.
In response to the disaster, the charity 'Design for Disasters' asked nine Thai studios to design earthquake-proof schools. The school designed by Vin Varavarn Architects is unique in that it is raised above the ground. The 'Baan Huay Sarn Yaw School' is comprised of three classrooms that sit on top of metal stilts. The sheltered space beneath the classroom features room for children to run and play. The classroom not only provides a space for students to learn, but it also offers a welcoming atmosphere for children who were affected by the earthquake.
