Project Alias Renames Your Smart Speaker to Protect Privacy

Smart speaker adoption rates have increased exponentially in the past year but are being criticized by some users due to privacy concerns, so Project Alias has been developed to help put more control into the hands of the owner.

The device works by being affixed onto the top of your smart speaker and instantly goes to work blocking out the units ability to listen in by changing the name or keyword it will respond to. This allows users to maintain more control over the device's ability to listen in on conversations and prevents information from being sent to the main server.

Project Alias has been created by Bjørn Karmann and Tore Knudsen, and is based on an entirely open-source platform that is powered by a Raspberry Pi board housed in a 3D-printed casing.
