Modern Porcelain Churches

Espen Surnevik and Trodahl Architects Design a New Church in Norway

A modern porcelain church takes the place of its 18th-century predecessor which was destroyed in a fire in 2011. Located in the city of Porgsrunn, Norway, the new building is designed in collaboration between architect Espen Surnevik and studio Trodahl Architects.

Exuding a strikingly modern sculptural quality, the new porcelain church is intended to preserve the monumental character of the one before it. The collaborators were attempting to "create the experience of something new and extraordinary." They were able to capture the essence of the 21st-century by opting in for unconventional materials and a silhouette that takes cues from modernism and minimalism.

The porcelain church that was erected by Espen Surnevik and Trodahl Architects is comprised out of 11 different geometric volumes that are arranged by height in order of their importance.
