SunOpta, now part of Refresco, expanded its Midlothian, Texas, operation with a $35M production line for plant-based milk and creamers, adding capacity to handle more volume closer to customer distribution points. The addition is the company's fourth line of this kind and gives its beverage network a 10% capacity increase.
The setup expands the pack formats SunOpta can produce there, including 32 oz Edge-style aseptic cartons and half-gallon sizes. That matters because larger, familiar formats make plant-based dairy easier to slot into existing retail sets and foodservice programs, rather than treating it as a niche special case.
For brands, this means a better shot at keeping milk and creamer orders moving while also adding larger formats to the mix. In plant-based beverages, manufacturing scale is starting to matter as much as flavor when retailers and foodservice buyers choose a partner.

Key Themes Behind This Trend
- Regionalized Plant-based Manufacturing
- Distributed production capacity places plant-based beverages closer to retail and foodservice demand, creating space for faster replenishment, lower logistics strain, and more resilient private-label supply.
- Mainstream Aseptic Format Expansion
- Larger aseptic cartons and half-gallon formats help plant-based dairy resemble conventional milk merchandising, opening opportunities for broader shelf integration and higher-volume household adoption.
- Scale-driven Beverage Competition
- Manufacturing capacity is becoming a competitive differentiator in plant-based beverages as buyers prioritize partners that can maintain consistent supply across multiple pack sizes and channels.
Where This Applies
- Plant-based Foods
- Category growth is increasingly tied to production infrastructure that supports everyday formats, positioning alternative dairy as a routine grocery staple rather than a specialty product.
- Beverage Manufacturing
- Expanded aseptic line capabilities signal new value in flexible facilities that can serve branded, private-label, and foodservice customers with multiple carton configurations.
- Retail Grocery
- Shelf planning for plant-based milk and creamers benefits from familiar package sizes that simplify placement alongside dairy products and support higher-volume purchasing behavior.
