Modular Seating Design Concepts

The PLA Modular Chair Reconfigures into Multiple Seating Forms

The PLA modular chair is a seating concept by designers Sihun Lim and Hyeonggyun Han that uses a single spherical connector to create three configurations. The module acts as a central joint that supports interchangeable PLA components and metal connectors, enabling assembly as a stool, a lounge chair, or an extended reclined structure. The system relies on snap-fit parts engineered for stability, and each piece is shaped to align with the sphere’s geometry so the structure maintains support when reconfigured. The approach focuses on reducing material waste by allowing a single kit to fulfill several functional roles.

The three formats, identified as O1 P, O2 A, and O3 L, differ in height, backrest angle, and leg arrangement while sharing a consistent visual language. The modular components can be swapped without tools, and the lightweight construction improves portability.
