Colonoscopies can be very unpleasant experience due solely to the nature of the procedure itself, but the PillCam COLON hopes to make it much more manageable to bear. It is a non-invasive alternative that allows people to swallow the camera instead of having it prodded up one's anal canal. As the PillCam COLON travels through the intestine, it wirelessly sends important data and images to doctors.
Developed by Israeli medical solutions company Given Imaging, the PillCam COLON has recently been approved by the FDA. Shaped like a pill, hence its name, it is easily swallowable. Slowly going through the body over approximately eight hours, it is currently positioned as a supplement to the standard colonoscopy procedure rather than a direct substitute pending technology and image improvements.
