There have been some intriguing period artworks over the years, yet this series takes on a more playful angle that many women can still relate to wholeheartedly. Taking common and not-so-common phrases, Layla Ehsan, an illustration student at the Rhode Island School of Design, creates relatable imagery that expresses how she feels when she has her period.

From rain clouds to red sharks and even a bloody knife, her period art is at once graphic and innocent. Not to mention comical. Dubbed Menstruisms, Ehsan writes, "It’s disorienting to have to pretend that such an essential function of my body doesn't exist." Many women will agree, but at the same time it's easy to pretend when it is such a common experience.
