Harley Weir is an extraordinary talent who doesn't follow conventional rules. For her latest project, a segment in i-D's 'Beautiful' issue, Weir photographs people kissing, nay, full-on snogging.
Though the concept is vague, Weir may be at her best when she's given full rein to explore a topic. She dives right in, saliva and all, to find out what it is about desire, and what she describes as "the wrongness of want," that both attracts and repels us. She continues, saying, "In this story I wanted to hold up a mirror to the grotesqueness of young desire."
The grotesque may be odd, absurd, exaggerated, but that doesn't mean that there isn't an element of beauty in it. The final images depict the reality of snogging, but hint at the latent sexuality behind it.
